More salt instead of less? The whole story about sodium.
Most dietary recommendations state: "Eat less salt!" – and this is true for the general population (*Diagram 1). At the same time, however, studies clearly show that for people with high physical stress – in sports as well as at work – too little sodium can be just as problematic as too much.
Sodium is not only a component of salt, but also a key electrolyte without which fluid balance, nerve function, and muscle function cannot function. The crucial factor is not a large or small amount , but rather the correct amount for the situation and the individual (**Diagram 2).
The key factor – as with sugars and carbohydrates – is a controlled intake of sodium.
Hidden sources of sodium, such as sausages, convenience or fast food, and highly salted foods, can lead to an unintentionally increased intake.
Was ist drin?
The GoMo 3 Tri-Magnesium Salt
The combination of three magnesium compounds – malate, citrate, and oxide – in GoMo SALTED offers a range of benefits. Each of these compounds has unique properties that together ensure a comprehensive magnesium supply.
Magnesium malate:
Magnesium malate is the magnesium compound of malic acid, which plays an important role in energy metabolism. It is well absorbed and can help increase energy production in cells, which is particularly beneficial for active people and athletes (Journal of Nutritional Medicine, 1991).
Magnesium citrate:
Magnesium citrate is known for its high bioavailability and effectiveness in supporting digestion and preventing constipation. It is rapidly absorbed by the body and helps to quickly increase blood magnesium levels, which prevents muscle cramps and supports muscle function (Magnesium Research, 2001).
Magnesium oxide:
Magnesium oxide has a high magnesium content per unit of weight, making it an effective source of sustained magnesium intake. It is helpful in maintaining normal magnesium levels and supports long-term supply, although it is absorbed somewhat more slowly than other forms (American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 2005).
The synergistic effect of these three magnesium compounds ensures a comprehensive and balanced magnesium supply. Magnesium plays a vital role in regulating muscle and nerve function, blood sugar control, and protein synthesis. By supporting electrolyte balance and preventing muscle cramps, magnesium significantly contributes to performance and recovery after physical activity (Nutrients, 2017).
Additionally, magnesium supports the cardiovascular system and can help reduce fatigue. Through the combination of magnesium malate, citrate, and oxide, GoMo SALTED offers a versatile magnesium supplement that provides both fast-acting and long-lasting benefits to enhance daily well-being and optimize physical performance.
Sodium from Alpine salt
Sodium is an essential electrolyte whose effects in the body are diverse and particularly relevant for people who are physically active or work in professions with high physical demands.
Fluid and electrolyte balance:
Sodium is crucial for maintaining fluid and electrolyte balance in the body. It helps retain water in cells and regulates the volume of extracellular fluid. During physical exertion or in high temperatures, the body loses sodium through sweating. Sodium supplements in beverage form can quickly replenish this loss and prevent dehydration (Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition, 2015).
Muscle function:
Sodium plays a vital role in nerve impulse transmission and muscle contraction. Adequate sodium intake is necessary to prevent muscle cramps and support overall muscle health. When administered in beverages, sodium can be rapidly absorbed by the body to ensure optimal muscle function (American Journal of Physiology, 2018).
Blood pressure regulation:
Sodium helps regulate blood pressure by influencing the fluid volume in the bloodstream. Adequate sodium levels are important for maintaining healthy blood pressure. Sodium supplements in beverage form can provide a controlled intake of sodium tailored to individual needs (New England Journal of Medicine, 2016).
Improved performance:
For athletes and people who are intensely physically active, sodium can improve performance by optimizing hydration and electrolyte balance. Studies have shown that sodium intake through beverages can increase endurance and performance during prolonged physical activity (Sports Medicine, 2020).
Rest and regeneration:
After intense physical activity, sodium helps replenish electrolytes and promote recovery. It supports the restoration of fluid balance and the repair of muscle tissue. Sodium-containing drinks are an effective way to accelerate post-workout recovery (International Journal of Sport Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism, 2019).
Overall, sodium offers numerous health and performance benefits. It supports hydration, muscle function, blood pressure regulation, and recovery, making it an important component for active people and athletes.
Sel des Alpes, the Swiss Alpine salt
SEL DES ALPES is a purely locally produced product based on Swiss ingenuity. It has been preserved in the rock for millions of years and is produced in an environmentally friendly manner.
Salt in the Alps?
That's right, thanks to the ancient Tethys Ocean, which covered the area more than 200 million years ago. As it retreated, it left behind the famous salt, which remained embedded in the rock as the Alps formed. And there it lies to this day, waiting to be enjoyed by us. Pure. Unadulterated. Clear.
Just like in prehistoric times.
Salt from the Alps or from the sea. Are there any differences?
Yes, there are differences regarding harmful residues between Alpine salt and sea salt. Alpine salt is extracted from underground deposits that have been protected by geological layers for millions of years. As a result, Alpine salt is often free of pollutants and microplastics that can be found in sea salt.
Sea salt is obtained through the evaporation of seawater. Due to increasing ocean pollution, there is a possibility that sea salt contains traces of heavy metals, microplastics, and other pollutants. Studies have shown that sea salt often contains small amounts of microplastic particles, which is attributed to general marine pollution (Environmental Science & Technology, 2018).
Overall, Alpine salt could therefore be considered the cleaner option, especially with regard to harmful residues resulting from environmental pollution.
Potassium in the form of potassium citrate. As diverse as we are.
Potassium citrate is an effective form of potassium that performs several crucial functions in the body. As an electrolyte, potassium plays a central role in maintaining fluid and electrolyte balance, muscle function, and blood pressure regulation.
1. Fluid and electrolyte balance:
Potassium citrate helps maintain the balance of fluids and electrolytes in the body. This is especially important during physical activity or in hot weather, where electrolyte loss through sweating needs to be replenished. When administered in beverages, potassium citrate can be absorbed more efficiently to prevent dehydration and keep the body hydrated (Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition, 2018).
2. Muscle function:
Potassium is essential for muscle function, including the heart muscle. It supports nerve impulse transmission and muscle contraction, preventing muscle cramps and improving overall muscle performance. Potassium citrate in beverages allows for the rapid delivery of this important mineral to promote muscle health during and after exercise (Journal of Physiology, 2004).
3. Blood pressure regulation:
Potassium helps regulate blood pressure by balancing the effects of sodium in the body. It supports the relaxation of blood vessels and promotes healthy heart function. In beverage form, potassium citrate can be a simple and effective way to meet daily potassium requirements and thus contribute to cardiovascular health (American Journal of Hypertension, 2005).
4. Acid-base balance:
Potassium citrate acts as an alkalizing agent in the body, helping to regulate the acid-base balance. This can be particularly useful in preventing acidosis, which can be caused by intense physical activity or an acidic diet (Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation, 2011).
5. Kidney function and bone health:
Potassium citrate can help prevent kidney stones by reducing calcium excretion in the urine and alkalizing the urine. This supports kidney health and may also have positive effects on bone health, as less calcium is mobilized from the bones (Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, 2011).
Overall, adding potassium citrate to beverages offers a good way to benefit from this important electrolyte. It supports hydration, muscle function, heart health, and acid-base balance, which is particularly beneficial for active people and athletes.
